AGN/galaxy separation in the ROSAT Bright Survey

چکیده
The X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of galaxies is dominated by AGN (classified by their optical spectra) above Lx = 10 42 erg s , below this value by normal galaxies. The X-ray flux of AGN at low X-ray luminosity therefore contains contributions from stellar processes (winds, supernova explosions etc.). Until now it is not clear which fraction of the observed X-ray flux has to be associated to the underlying stellar emission. We started to investigate a complete luminosity-limited sample of AGN and galaxies with log Lx ≤ 42.5 to discriminate between the nuclear and galaxy flux. Using the ROSAT HRI data we calculated the radial wobble-corrected profiles of the sources which were compared to a new HRI point spread function (PSF) template derived from 21 X-ray bright stars. The majority of the low-luminosiy AGN shows evidence for a significant fraction of extended X-ray emission.

New active galactic nuclei detected in ROSAT All Sky Survey galaxies I. Verification of selection strategy
We present the first results of a program to identify so far unknown active nuclei (AGN) in galaxies. Candidate galactic nuclei have been selected for optical spectroscopy from a cross-correlation of the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) bright source catalog with optical galaxy catalogs. A high X-ray flux has been used as pointer to galaxies with a high probability to contain active nuclei. Only gal...

We have identified the ROSAT source RX J0039.2-5117 with the previously almost unknown 'narrow line' Seyfert 1 galaxy WPVS007 (z = 0:028). The X-ray source displays quite unusual properties for an AGN. It was bright and ultrasoft in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) and found at a level lower by a factor of 400 in PSPC count rate in 1993. The implied 0:1 2:4 keV luminosity during the RASS was 10 ...
متن کاملRX J1624.9+7554: A new X-ray transient AGN
We report the discovery of a new X-ray transient AGN, RX J1624.9+7554. This object appeared to be bright in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, but had turned off in two pointed observations about one and a half years later. The optical identification spectrum shows a non-emission line spectrum of a spiral galaxy at z=0.064. We will discuss several hypotheses that can explain the peculiar behaviour of th...
